Show And Tell By William Levert
Pages - 4
PAGE 1 / Panels - 6
Panel 1: A family portrait.  Pictured is a happy, African American family of five dressed in every day clothes.  Standing in the back row are the mother and father.  On the left is the father who is bald, about 45 with a full beard and goatee and a pair of glasses on.  On the right is the mother, about 40, who has long, curly black hair.  Both are smiling brightly.  In the lower row are the three kids.  On the left is the older brother, about 17 years old.  He has short black hair and has a bright smile much like his parents.  In the middle is Kyle, the youngest at 10 years old.  He also has short black hair, and is grinning like a fool, showing his teeth and looks the happiest.  On the right is the sister about 15 years old with long, straight black hair with a bright smile matching the parents and older brother.

Text 1: Kyle came from a happy family.  The youngest of three siblings, with two loving parents.  It was the kind of family we all dreamed of.

Panel 2:  Kyle is sitting at a table with a pen in hand doing his homework, a look of concentration on his face. He's wearing a dark colored t-shirt.  His father is standing behind him to his right with his left hand on Kyle's shoulder, smiling.  He is wearing a light colored long sleeved button up, both of their lower forms hidden by the table.

Text 2: His dad was always there to help him keep up good study habits.

Panel 3:  Kyle is in a kitchen.  We have a side view of him standing atop a chair that has been pulled against a high counter.   He is wearing a pair of light colored shorts and a dark t-shirt, with a white apron over it all.  His head is tilted over his shoulder and he has a wide, happy grin on his face.  Behind him stands his mother in a light pair of pants and a long sleeved blouse with a white apron over it all.  Her arms are crossed over her chest and she is smiling at Kyle.

Text 3:  His mother was always there to show him that cooking wasn't just a girl's job.

Panel 4:  Kyle is running in an open field of grass.  He is wearing a pair of dark jeans, light colored sneakers and an oversized dark colored football jersey with the number seventy-nine on the front.  Both of his arms are held high above his head, hands reaching out.  Behind him in the distance is his older brother dressed in a pair of light colored pants and a long sleeved dark top.  His right arm is angled up and out as if he's just thrown a pass to Kyle.  A football hangs in the air between them that Kyle is looking to catch.

Text 4:  His older brother was always there to play sports and keep him on his toes.

Panel 5:  Kyle is standing in front of a black piano.  He's wearing a pair of dark pants and a matching dark t-shirt.  His arms are held out at his sides, with his head tilted upward his mouth open wide as if he's singing.  His sister is sitting at the piano, only the upper portion of her body visible, enough that we can see she's wearing a white top.  She is watching Kyle sing, and smiling as she plays the piano.

Text 5: His older sister was always there to teach him that you didn't have to limit yourself to just one talent.

Panel 6:  A TV screen. We get a sky view of a shopping mall, half of it obscured by a large cloud of smoke.  Across the bottom of the screen is a news line that reads: [Channel 6 breaking news report.  Large explosion at local shopping center.  Number of fatal casualties still growing.]

Text 6: And one day, while at a friends house, he lost them all to a national tragedy.

PAGE 2 / Panels - 5

Panel 1:  Kyle is standing in front of four head stones.  The backs of the stones are to us, with Kyle facing us as he looks at the fronts.  His head is bowed, his arms at his sides, and his shoulders slumped.  He has tears running down his cheeks from both eyes.  He is wearing a black suit with a white shirt beneath, and a black tie.  There is nothing else in the panel, everything else besides Kyle and the graves is a blank white space, as if nothing else exists except Kyle and the graves.

Text 1:  Kyle lost everything that day.  He felt as if he were no longer a part of the world.  He was completely alone.

Panel 2:  Kyle is standing out in front of a normal looking house.  His back is to us.  He is wearing a pair of light colored pants, and a dark colored long sleeved top.  His right hand is clutching the strap of a large duffel bag which is laying on the ground beside him.  There is someone stranding in front of him with their arms wrapped around him.  They are the size of an adult, but their body is completely black, similar to a shadow.  They are completely featureless except for a pair of white eyes and a white mouth, all slanted in a downward arc, white tears coming from the corners of the eyes.  [NOTE: Reference picture included.  The black mask is the closest.  All of the "shadows" will have those types of features, though with varying emotional expressions]

Text 2:  Kyle was sent to live with family in another town, but even they could not pierce through the shroud of loneliness that had taken him over.  Even here he was alone.

Panel 3:  Kyle is walking down the hall of a his new school.  There are lockers on either side of him along with various students standing at them.  They are all in the form of "shadows" looking at him with laughing faces, some of the shadows pointing in his direction.  Kyle is wearing a simple, light colored t-shirt, and dark jeans.  Arms are bent with his hands grasping at his book bag straps near his shoulders.  His head is tilted downward in sadness.

Text 3:  But nothing could prepare him for what he would encounter at his new school.  He tried not to listen to the whispers, but to him, they were like screams.  The Government faked the tragedy.  No one really died.  The people listed as casualties probably didn't really exist.

Panel 4:  A close up of Kyle's face.  His eyes are wide, tears starting to stream down his cheeks.  Around him from different angles are word balloons with various statements.

Text 4:

Balloon 1: "That's Him!"

Balloon 2: "Mytube said the accident was fake!"

Balloon 3: "My big brother said nobody really died!"

Balloon 4: "It was all a conspiracy to pass new laws!"

Balloon 5:  "He's probably in on it!"

Balloon 6: "His family wasn't even real!"

Panel 5:  Another close up of Kyle, though this time his eyes are shut tight, and his hands are covering his ears.  There is darkness all around him, but it is filled with mocking, laughing emote-like faces on either side of him.  Just white eyes and smiling mouths.

Text 5: What where they talking about?!  His family had existed!  They had been real!  He'd prove it!  He'd show them all!

PAGE 3 / Panels 5

Panel 1:  Kyle is standing in front of a class room. His teacher's desk is behind him.  We can see the first few rows of desks, the kids sitting at them are "shadows".  Kyle is wearing the same oversized #79 football jersey from Page one, panel 4, and a pair of dark pants.  He is holding what looks to be a large picture album against his chest, covering up the number for now.  His teacher is standing off to his left, and she isn't a shadow.  She's a blonde woman in her mid twenties, wearing a light colored blouse, and a long light colored skirt.  She's smiling in Kyle's direction.

Text 1:  Kyle asked his teacher if he could do a show and tell to introduce himself to his new classmates.  She agreed, but when he was ready, it was more than just himself he introduced to his class.  He started off with his parents wedding album, showing them pictures of his mother and father together and how happy they'd been.  How it proved they had existed.

Panel 2:  Kyle is still standing in front of the class, though the view is now to his right [The teacher no longer showing].  At his right is a TV sitting on the teacher's desk.  On the screen we can just make out a figure with a #79 Football jersey on, and a helmet.  He has a football tucked against his right side beneath his right arm, and his left arm is raised in the air.  No longer holding the wedding album, we see Kyle is wearing that same jersey.  We can see two or three desks with one of the student's no longer appearing as a "Shadow."  He's a young boy with short dark hair and a dark colored top.  He's looking at the TV with awe.  The other students shown are still shadows.

Text 2:  He showed them a video of his brother winning the championship for his high school football team, showing them how athletic he'd been.  How REAL he'd been.

Panel 3:  The view is behind Kyle now.  We see the upper half of his body in front of the desk.  Beside him on his left is a radio with waves coming from it letting us know that music is playing from it.  We can see the front row of desks in front of him on either side.  To his right we see the same boy from Panel 2.  Beside him sits a "shadow", but on his left we see a girl with long dark hair, her chin resting in her hands, elbows on her desk as she listens to the music with a bright smile.  She's wearing a long sleeved, light colored top.

Text 3:  He let them listen to one of the CD's his sister made for a local radio contest.  With a voice as beautiful as hers, there was no way she could have been fake.

Panel 4:  A close up of Kyle standing alone, just darkness around him.  His eyes are closed and tears are streaming down his cheeks.  His mouth is set in a frown, his teeth gritted.  His arms are at his sides and his fingers are locked into fists.  He is trembling.

Text 4:  See!  They had existed!  His family had been real!  They could see that!  But now they were gone.  Would he always be this alone?

Panel 5:  Extreme close up of Kyle's face, the darkness still around him.  His eyes are open wide in disbelief, tears still streaming down his cheeks.

Text 5:  His dread had reached it's deepest point, he didn't know if he could take it anymore.  But on that day, in that moment, he realized the truth....

PAGE 4 / Panel 1

Full page splash: The darkness is gone, the scene totally white.  We have a big group hug with Kyle in the center.  His teacher is standing behind him with her arms around his shoulders, her head bowed.  Kyle's eyes are closed, and tears are still streaming down his cheeks, but he has a big, bright smile on his face.  Around him, joining in on the hug on either side and in front of him are various students, no longer shadows.  Nothing too specific, a few girls, and a few boys, a few standing off to the side in various poses of celebration.  Those who's faces we can see are smiling brightly, a few laughing, reaching out for Kyle.

Text 1:  He WAS NOT ALONE.

The script I wrote for a story in the Grayhaven Comics graphic novel, "You Are Not Alone."  It's a story about a boy who lost his family to tragedy, and having to deal with bullying from those who didn't understand his situation, and let the media cloud their judgment.
